The AI Apocalypse
“Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks. In the near term, world militaries are considering autonomous-weapon systems that can choose and eliminate targets. Humans, limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete and would be superseded by A.I.” - Stephen Hawking
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rising in the human awareness and discussion around its applications thrives—as do ideas of AI as a threat. Even Stephen Hawking warned that AI could destroy humanity.
In the near future, approximately 50 years from now, advances in technology and robotics can overstep human evolution. And by that I meant the possibility that we might one day upload our minds into robots and eventually, cyberspace has become commonplace and now affects life across a broad spectrum. A computer can do all the mental tasks that humans can and the risk is not that machines can achieve human-intelligence soon, but that when they can quickly and exponentially upgrade their (software) intelligence, surpassing humans in every field. Robots will be taking over the earth and sooner or later, the human race will go extinct.
Here’s hoping that a parallel universe with human inhabitants exists, but only the smarter ones though. Humans version 2.0. Wouldn‘t that be cool?
